How to maintain gutters and roofs?

Find out how to maintain rainwater gutters, repair your roofs and gutters to avoid leaks, drips or humidity problems.

  1. Using your hands and gloves, remove any leaves and branches that may be blocking the flow of water through the gutters. Use a fine-bristled brush to scrape off any stuck-on dirt. To clean the gutters, you can use hard-bristle or plastic brushes, depending on the dirt. You must ensure that the use of steel-bristle brushes does not break the tin gutters or scratch the PVC ones.

Recommendations for the maintenance of rainwater gutters: Never place a ladder directly on a gutter or downspout, as this could damage them. If the ground is grass or soft soil, place a board or pieces of wood under the legs to give them greater stability and prevent them from sinking. The board should have a larger support surface than the legs.
  2. Wash and unclog: You can use a hose with a piston nozzle or a pressure washer. The water pressure will wash the inside of the gutters and downspouts, drag away debris and unclog them if they are clogged. Using this method, you can also check the condition of the gutters and downspouts, to see if they have leaks or holes that need to be fixed.

Recommendations: The most common mistake is to send the water from the gutters to the sewer system, but this collapses the system because it already comes with the rainwater from the streets. That is why the water from the downspouts must fall into a drainage well or a rainwater collection system.
  3. Repairing leaks and cracks:  You can seal cracks with a sealant applied with a caulking gun or spatula. We recommend protecting the screw heads with a sealant, as this is one of the areas where water and moisture can seep in.
  4. Cleaning mold:  Clean the ceiling with a broom and brush. Mold can be removed with bleach diluted in water, in a ratio of 1 to 10. Use a sponge with this mixture on the mold and scrub to remove it completely. Allow to dry and the cracks will be exposed.
  5. Repair the cracks:  Cracks are usually caused by applying too much pressure on the screw, or by walking on the roof. These cracks continue to grow due to the pressure of the water on the structure.

As a solution to the emergency, you can apply an epoxy adhesive, which has a catalyst that hardens and is more rigid, which is what we need. If it were more flexible, the sheet would continue to work and the crack would grow.
  6. Changing the plank:  For a definitive solution to a crack or when the break cannot be fixed with epoxy adhesive, the plank must be replaced. To do this, you must ensure that the correct overlap is 1 1/2 waves, and also place the fixings at the top of the wave, not at the bottom.
  7. Seal the roof: Apply a sealant to the fiber cement roof, which is a film that helps with cracks and leaks, especially in the screw areas.
